What is a film still, in production terms?

A film still is a single frame pulled from a scene and printed for use outside it: look development, key art, a press kit, a director’s reference. It carries the decisions of the whole scene in one rectangle — the direction of the key, the focal length, the palette, the stock — which is why a still is judged as part of a set rather than on its own.

How do you get a film still rather than a photograph?

Four decisions separate them. Light has a direction and a motivation: a window, a practical, a street light. The contrast ratio is deliberate, so the shadow side still holds detail rather than going to mud or to black. The lens leaves a visible trace — compression, flare, depth of field. And the frame is composed for negative space, because a still usually has to sit inside a layout.

The fifth thing is what you leave out. A photograph often aims to show everything; a still is allowed to hide a room behind a silhouette and let the audience fill it in.

Which lenses and stocks should you name?

Focal length decides how the space feels before anything else changes. A 35mm puts the subject in a room; a 50mm reads like a conversation; an 85mm compresses the background into soft shapes and flatters a face; a 135mm isolates the subject entirely. Naming the lens is usually more useful than naming the framing, because it tells the model how much perspective distortion to draw.

Stock language covers texture and colour response. Kodak publishes its Vision3 500T as a tungsten-balanced stock and its 250D as daylight-balanced, which makes a useful shorthand: a 500T look pulls toward warm practicals and forgiving shadows, a daylight stock reads cooler and cleaner. Add grain size last and ask for no digital sharpening.

How do you keep one look across a set of stills?

Treat the light line and the stock line as constants and change one camera variable per test.
